The Mariensäule on the Markusberg was built between 1859 and 1866 in thanks for the city's liberation from the French. Standing 40 m tall and visible from across the Moselle, it sits on a plateau by the old pumping station which gives the classic postcard view of the cathedral, the Liebfrauenkirche, and the Roman Bridge.
